Jac Morgan of Wales

Jac Morgan isn't a man who cares to talk about himself.

The Wales captain was the shining light in Wales' defeat to France last Friday night. The numbers were frankly astonishing.

The Ospreys openside gained more metres-in-contact than any other player in the opening round of the Six Nations, while no player recorded more combined numbers for carries, tackles and rucks hit than the 25-year-old.

21 tackles, 15 carries and 81 metres made altogether. Few forwards in the last two decades have managed as many metres in a match for Wales.

Remarkable statistics in any game, but in the context of Wales' defeat in Paris and where they find themselves in a lengthy 16-month losing run, each of those statistics becomes that little bit more impressive.

This is a man desperately throwing his body around for 80 minutes, even when the odds are stacked heavily against him and his team-mates, all in the pursuit of that little bit of pride Welsh rugby gives us a nation.

And yet, put some of those numbers to him and the man who never takes a backwards step on the pitch has to take a few moments to find his words.

"It's always important to try and perform," Morgan eventually said on the side of Wales' training pitch in Rome. "Try and do the best you can for the team, every single one of us. We'll try and put in a performance tomorrow."

Like another Wales and Ospreys captain before him, in Justin Tipuric, the subject of himself is one that Morgan doesn't really want to puff up with quotes.

This isn't a false humility act, the kind you occasionally see in this game. Sweeping the sheds when the cameras are around, profound answers that give the impression of modesty, but ultimately serve the purpose of bolstering the stock of the speaker.

That's not what Morgan is about. Those who know him, back from his Cwmtwrch RFC days through to now, know that. So too do those at Aberavon.

Five years ago, Morgan led Wales U20s to a dramatic victory over England in Colwyn Bay. 16 hours later, he was the Talbot Athletic Ground supporting his team-mates at the Wizards.

Speak to anyone who knows him and you'll hear the same stories about his work-ethic, how he leads by example and how he's loyal.

The story goes that when he was with the Scarlets, one of their academy managers wasn't thrilled that Morgan was still playing for Aberavon. A meeting was called to tell Morgan he'd be turning out for Llanelli, rather than the Wizards.

So, in walked Morgan to the meeting, decked out from head to toe in Aberavon gear. Point made.

That sounds just like the man who continually took the fight to France time and time again last weekend, even as the scoreline headed further and further in the wrong direction. A man who, according to rugby statistician Russ Petty, has averaged 17 tackles per Test start since making his debut in 2022.

With all that is going on in Welsh rugby right now, the mood in camp - with the team having spent a week out in Nice - is remarkably upbeat. Once again, Morgan is typically self-deprecating about his own contribution as captain in keeping morale up.

"There's a leadership group within the boys and there's a lot of leaders that help out," he says. "We're just trying to drive messages in certain aspects.

"At the same time, we've done a couple of things as a team in the week and boys have chucked out ideas. We've gone about and done a few bits like that to get everyone close and get them mixing."

The Wales captain will never be the type to draw attention to his own efforts. In fairness, after last week's performance, there was little need - it was there for all to see.

With 13 defeats in a row at Test level, Morgan, like so many Welsh players right now, deserves better. But whenever that losing run comes to an end, expect Morgan to be to the fore.

Even if that doesn't come in Rome, he'll likely still be leading from the front regardless. And then, after all that, still not caring to speak about himself afterwards.
